What is an Illustrator?

Advertising Illustrators research and create drawings and pictures to visually portray their own or other creative's ideas. They illustrate for commercial packaging, brochures, and various other forms of advertising and digital media.

The Illustrator is normally briefed by an agency Art Director as to the creative direction and content of the desired illustration. The first stage is the preparation of preliminary drawings and scamps for approval. Thereafter the Illustrator will prepare comprehensive rough drafts for the purpose of visualising the final image and obtain final approval of the illustration.

The Illustrator has to be able to estimate timelines for the completion of an illustration and the associated costs, before preparing the finished artwork using the desired medium—usually, in the case of an Advertising Illustrator, digital art created on a computer.
